Workshops

Like Jess, Brian is also an Ironman triathlete, a plant-based nutrition enthusiast, and practices what he preaches; so it made perfect sense for the two of them to begin offering workshops at the studio.  Together they taught several increasingly well-attended and received Yoga for Athletes workshops at Rhode Island Power Yoga that focused on yoga’s central mindfulness practices, intelligent athletic training, and nutrition.” – Renee Deslauriers and Philip Urso, co-owners, Rhode Island Power Yoga

The Foundations: Strength, Length And Self Care

Highly competitive athletes are turning to power vinyasa more and more often. Most training regimens, by their repetitive nature, create imbalance in the body that can easily lead to injury. Among these imbalances are limited range of motion, stiffness, and underdeveloped stabilization muscles. A well-designed power yoga class brings the body back into balance while strengthening it from the inside out. There is no use in training the body hard and long when it is not durable and cannot handle the load. Building on an unsteady foundation is a recipe for injury and time off.

This two-hour workshop offers a 60-minute power vinyasa practice specifically designed for the athlete body. The practice portion is a 50/50 split to provide the athlete with strength poses to target common areas of weakness and during the 2nd half, plenty of mat time to restore the body, lengthen soft tissue and open joint space. This will be followed by an open discussion on topics such as strength, self-care and injury.

Ride The High Vibe: The Yoga of Competition

Athletes know that when it comes to competition, mental strength is where the advantage is found. Anyone can get the physical fitness but it’s the ability to stay focused on the goal and away from fears and doubts that create a winner on the day. Yoga’s mindfulness practices guide athletes to strengthen their focus on present moment awareness and away from worrisome, energy wasting thought patterns. Science has shown that present moment focus is the essence of the psychology of peak performance in sport (Jackson & Csik- szentmihalyi, 1999; Ravizza, 2002). It is from present moment awareness that athletes can achieve a state of flow where they feel and perform their best.

This two-hour workshop includes a 30-minute yoga practice that may be recorded and used on busy days of training when yoga would normally be sidelined. This is followed by a guided meditation focusing on mind training and an open discussion on the yoga of competition, tapping into flow on purpose and understanding the science behind the benefits of present moment awareness to athletic performance.

The Smart Athlete: Recovery and Nutrition

Training is so much more than getting your workouts done and all the best athletes in the world know this to be true. Athletic performance pushes your body to the edge by inducing controlled levels of damage. Without proper nutrition and recovery, athletes lose strength, take longer to recover between workouts and cultivate long term damage to their body and overall health. Knowing the right foods to eat before, during and after your workouts/games/races is paramount to your body’s ability to perform day after day.

But nutrition is only a piece of recovering your body well. Every athlete struggles at some point in determining when enough is enough. When to push through a workout and when to let it go. When to take a day off, how to properly taper for an event and recover in the days following. Proper recovery and nutrition is ultimately what will keep your body growing stronger, providing you with years of longevity in your sport.

This two-hour workshop includes a 60-minute restorative practice designed to stimulate the natural healing mechanisms in the body, lengthen soft tissue and open joint space for better mobility. This will be followed by an open discussion on the importance of recovery and nutrition as a part of every athlete’s training regimen.
